How Will So.Co. Supervisors Protect All Residents of the County?
My name is Dave Ransom. I live in Santa Rosa. I am a member of the Junior College Neighborhood chapter of Indivisible.
There are a number of us here, though I don’t speak for the group tonight, just myself. We are facing tough times. They are likely to get worse. A fascist coup is under way. Good, bad, or indifferent, the sheriff is caught between a rock and a hard place. What he can do legally, he should do – at the very least. And I don’t stand with the idea that we should go ahead and deport immigrants with a record. We don’t exile citizens who have done their time. Agreeing to be party to deporting any folks with a record just gives ICE a foot in the door. But the sheriff faces a challenge that’s a whole lot bigger than just not cooperating with ICE. He and his deputies have a commitment to protect the community – not just part of the community, all of the community. So how can he stand by while masked gun thugs in street clothes round up folks and terrorize us? And can we ask him, and his deputies to do anything more. But he’s not the only elected official that the Trump regime has put in this situation. The federal government has gone rogue. And it has put county supervisors in the same position. You, supervisors, are going to be called on – you are being called on – to lead at a time when food becomes scarce, when our schools lack necessary funds, when the poor lose their housing, when the sick and the elderly face going without care. All of us are going to be adversely affected by this regime. Folks here in the county will need strong leadership from you. And you will need strong support – and helping hands – from us. El pueblo, unido, jamas sera vencido! The people, united, will never be defeated |
